Gotu Kola

The Asian pennywort, also known as gotu kola or tiger grass, derives its true strength from its high concentration of unique triterpene compounds (also called saponins). It contains a variety of nutrients that contribute to its medicinal properties, including vitamins B and C, along with a handful of phytonutrients such as flavonoids, tannins, and polyphenols. These plant nutrients provide the herb with antioxidant properties, which help prevent cellular damage and aid in disease prevention.

By enhancing blood flow to the cells and providing protection against infections, gotu kola can accelerate the healing process. Additionally, the saponins in gotu kola significantly improve the external appearance of the skin. Many cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies are interested in it because of its ability to reduce scars, wrinkles, and other blemishes. It is particularly effective in preventing the formation of scar tissue, helping the skin remain beautiful even after injuries or surgery. The wellness and cosmetics industry has also embraced the power of gotu kola, successfully using its active ingredients to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. By improving circulation, it effectively addresses varicose veins, ankle swelling, and stretch marks.

The telomerase enzyme is responsible for maintaining the length of telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Over time, telomere shortening can lead to cellular division problems, which is one of the main biological causes of aging. While telomerase cannot be replenished directly through diet, the active compounds in gotu kola naturally stimulate the body’s own production of the telomerase enzyme, helping keep cells youthful. Telomere shortening is a natural process during cell division, but harmful factors such as free radicals and environmental stress can accelerate this process.

As telomeres shorten with each cell division, they eventually reach a critical length where cells can no longer divide. At this stage, cells enter a state known as senescence, where they remain alive but no longer divide. These senescent cells may lose some or all of their function and can eventually emit inflammatory signals, contributing to the aging process and the decline in tissue function.

Shortened telomeres also increase the risk of DNA damage and faulty cell division. Without the protective “cap” of telomeres, the genetic material in chromosomes becomes more vulnerable to harmful effects, leading to mutations. This DNA damage can result in errors during division, potentially harming the cell and even triggering cancerous processes.

Overall, telomere shortening presents a dual challenge:

  1. The loss of cellular division capability and the onset of senescence.
  2. An increased risk of errors and mutations during cell division.

The telomerase enzyme, which can lengthen telomeres, is therefore of significant interest in aging research and cancer prevention, as preserving telomeres could alleviate both of these issues.

A 2019 study found that Asian pennywort extract increased telomerase production by 8.8 times in cell cultures, suggesting that this herb could play a major role in combating aging in the future. Telomerase enzymes are crucial in processes related to aging and in maintaining the long-term health of cells.

The effect of telomerase-supporting plants lies in their ability to enhance the body’s own telomerase production through specific mechanisms. Another advantage of gotu kola is its highly positive impact on neurological issues, supported by numerous studies. These studies showed that consuming gotu kola reduced the frequency and severity of panic attacks in participants suffering from generalized anxiety disorder.

Furthermore, the calming effect of gotu kola directly influences the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and promote healthy sleep. These benefits are particularly important for those suffering from epilepsy or premature aging. Regular consumption of gotu kola can significantly improve their quality of life, supporting neural balance and reducing the severity of their condition.

Gotu kola has also been linked to the reduction of other illnesses, including congestive heart failure. This is partly due to its ability to ease tension and anxiety in the arteries and blood vessels, allowing for better blood pressure regulation and reducing the strain on the circulatory system. As a result, it can extend the “shelf life” of the heart and prevent arterial calcification, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Additionally, it is used as an energy booster in the bedroom, as an increase in libido is a common side effect. Consequently, in addition to replenishing mental energy and physical reserves, it can contribute to revitalizing and enhancing romantic relationships.
